Curious about whether a functional nutrition approach to care could make a difference in your life? You’re in the right place. Here are some frequently asked questions I get from clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Functional medicine approach looks to see if you are deficient in minerals, vitamins, water and nutrients. It also considers environmental toxins, heavy metals, bacterial, fungal imbalance. It may be simple, complex, and entails more exploratory work than prescribing medication but it can give you a more gratifying answer. Functional medicine is:

    • It is patient-centered

    • It is based on each person’s unique needs

    • It helps to balance your biochemistry

    • It focuses on improving and integrating physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional functions.

    • It encourages you to take an active role in your program.

    • It is interested in outcomes rather than controlling the symptoms

    • It aims to help your body come back into dynamic alignment

    • It is holistic rather than specialized. It approaches the body as an interconnected web where you pull on one string and realize it is connected to everything else.

  • In the functional approach, we look at the person as an entire being rather than sectioning the body off for different specialists to treat your heart condition, lung condition, a gastroenterologist for GI problems, a rheumatologist for joint pain, and so on. Sometimes all of these can be interconnected because the human body is interconnected, and looking at the body through that lens can uncover the source of the problem rather than trying to quiet the symptoms. We are realistic about limitations but also optimistic about connecting the dots and helping you towards optimal health.

A CNS is required to have an advanced degree in nutrition (graduate or doctorate) from a fully accredited university, complete 1,000 supervised hours by a board approved supervisor and pass arduous board exam administered by the Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists℠. The graduate course work required for a CNS includes advanced biochemistry, nutrition, organic chemistry, advanced anatomy, physiology, science research, clinical assessment and evidence-based nutrition therapy. CNS practitioners work in private practice, and in integrative and functional medicine practices.

  • A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD) is required to have a baccalaureate degree, board certified by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and mostly works in hospitals, nursing homes, public health spaces. In addition to the above qualifications, CNS® has a patient-centered focus and looks at the root causes outlining protocols using therapeutic food, supplements, herbs and integrative lifestyle strategies to address them accordingly. Most importantly, both have similar missions in providing nutrition services to those in need, so I encourage you to do your own research into finding the right practitioner that fits your health needs.
